For 31-year old Orange County resident Aaron Mayfield, OCR has become an integral part of his busy lifestyle. Like so many kindred OCR athletes, he has also found it to become a positive, self-development addiction. Although he spends long hours working as GSM at a large Southern California auto dealership, he always finds time to grind it out in the evenings – preparing both mind and body for his true passion…Obstacle Course Racing.
Never Failure Only Growth...
I started racing 3 years ago, completing my first Spartan Sprint in Temecula, CA. I learned about the trifecta at that venue and later that year I went on to complete the Super in Monterey. After very little training, I attempted the Beast in Temecula.
To my great disappointment, I failed to complete the full race. I was taken off of the course with heat exhaustion after the 7th mile. Looking back now on that race, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I felt the need to constantly improve after that failure. A month later I flew to Dallas to compete in that Beast to complete my trifecta for 2015.
Becoming an OCR Junkie
Once I completed that trifecta, I was hooked on racing. I purchased a season pass for 2016, and completed 17 races that year, including 5 trifectas.
Feeling the need to constantly improve, I have run 16 races in 2017 including 5 trifectas. I have also competed in the Ultra World Championship in Iceland, and have an even more stacked 2018 season ahead!
My finest accomplishment changes constantly…to set a new personal record each week, or to race in World Championship Beast races this year on both days felt amazing!! The people that race in our sport are absolutely amazing, to see them race is an honor as well.
My ultimate goal is to be at the top of the elite class in Spartan. I have registered in the age group series for 2018, formerly known as the competitive series. I can’t wait to see what challenges it will bring. Every race I complete, or record I set, I give complete credit to the people around me.
It's All About The Support
I have a great girlfriend Kylie DeFabio that attends every race with me, and travels the country and world along my side. My father has supported me along this journey, and always reminds me to never quit.
I have also received a ton of helpful tips from the Spartan community, including elite racers Emilee Kate Smith and Ryan Kent a few years back, I thank them both a ton for their support.
