Spartan Blazes New Obstacle Racing Trail with Introduction of Six-Race Mountain Series Presented by the U.S. Air Force
World’s Largest Obstacle Race and Endurance Brand Launches New Competitive Series
BOSTON, Mass. (HOLD) – The best athletes in Obstacle Racing (OCR) will collide when Spartan brings the sport to new heights with the launch of a six-race Mountain Series presented by the U.S. Air Force. Testing the stamina and strength of competitors, the Spartan Mountain Series presented by the U.S. Air Force unfolds across Spartan’s signature “Sprint,” “Super” and “Beast” race formats that will take competitors up treacherous trails to test their physical and mental strength. Spartan has more than $50,000 in cash prizes on the line.
“The Mountain Series takes Spartan competition to a whole new level, testing the strength of our athletes against rugged, technical terrain as they ascend and descend some of the most challenging mountains in the country,” said Spartan Vice President of Product David Watson. “As we drive the sport of OCR forward, the Mountain Series expands our competitive offerings for racers, providing them with more opportunities for prize money and bragging rights than ever before.”
The series kicks-off May 5 along the shores of Flathead Lake in Big Fork, Montana with a grueling Beast before heading to Welch Village Ski Resort in Minneapolis, Minnesota for a Sprint June 9; Blue Mountain Ski Area in Palmerton, PA for a Super; the Colorado Rockies August 18; and Killington Ski Resort in Vermont September 15 for back-to-back Beasts. The final event of the series will take place October 27 at Mountain Creek Resort in Vernon, NJ across a Super race course. The Sprint is 3-5 miles with more than 20 obstacles, the Super is 8-10 miles with more than 25 obstacles and the Beast is 12-14 miles with more than 25 obstacles.
The top 10 male and female finishers at each Mountain Series race will take home race prize money and earn ranking points that will determine the series winners – with the top 10 elite male and female series finishers awarded the series prize money when a King and Queen of the Mountain are crowned. Competitors must finish a minimum of three mountain series races to be eligible for series ranking and prizes. Age group winners will also be recognized and all racers, including the open heats will receive special series medals when they cross the finish line.
The Mountain Series presented by the U.S. Air Force is the latest series of the 2018 Spartan season to be announced.
“The Air Force is excited to partner with Spartan and support participants as they reach new heights in the Mountain Series,” said Timothy Hanson, Chief Marketing Officer, Air Force Recruiting Service. “Spartan aligns very well with our target audience’s interests and the Air Force’s commitment to fitness, training and competition. Our Airmen and Special Operators endure unique and intense training designed to develop their skills and test their limits, just like those individuals training and competing in Spartan Race.”
Spartan’s expanded Global Championship Series unfolds across five continents leading to the Spartan World Championship in Lake Tahoe, CA and the returning Stadium Series unfolds across the hallowed grounds of America’s most beloved ballparks and stadiums, with a new Stadium Championship Series offering increased prize money.
Spartan events focus on sport and athleticism, pushing the bodies and minds of competitors to the limit across miles of unforgiving terrain while they conquer signature obstacles such as the Spear Throw, Bucket Brigade and Barbed Wire Crawl. With more than 29,000 cumulative feet of elevation between the six events of the Mountain Series, competitors will face an uphill battle and can find a series-specific training plan on Spartan.com to prepare for the challenges ahead.
