World’s Largest Obstacle Race and Endurance Brand Journeys Back to the Ruins of Ancient Sparta for Three-Day Destination Race Weekend November 2-4
SPARTA, GREECE (November 2, 2018) – This weekend, athletes from 57 countries around the world will journey back to the ancient ruins, rivers and mountains of the legendary city of Sparta for the inaugural invite-only Trifecta World Championship. With a $20,000 USD prize purse, the weekend’s series of events will test the strength and endurance of athletes from around the globe with the three signature races of Spartan’s coveted Trifecta. The races will stream live exclusively on Facebook WATCH via the Spartan TV page for fans across the world.

The gated Spartan Trifecta World Championship features the race formats of the Spartan Trifecta, and with more than 1,000 athletes competing in all three, this marks the biggest “Trifecta Weekend” in history. Races begin Saturday at8am with the 13 to 15-km (eight to 10-mile)/24 to 29-obstacle “Super,” followed by the five to eight-km (three to five-mile)/20 to 23-obstacle “Sprint” at12:30am local time. The weekend will close Sunday after the behemoth 20 to 22-km (12 to 14-mile) 30 to 35-obstacle “Beast,” which begins at 8:30 am. Competitor’sTo be crowned Trifecta World Champions male and female athletes must achieve the fastest cumulative time across the Sprint, Super and Beast races – with the top ten athletes of each gender taking home a piece of the $20,000 USD purse. All of the 3,000 athletes invited to compete have earned a coveted “Spartan Trifecta,” which is accomplished by completing all three race formats in a calendar year. In addition to the traditional prize purse, the UK’s Jon Albon looks to keep his hopes of winning $1 Million USD alive as part of Spartan’s $1 Million Trifecta – which is offered to an elite athlete should they win the Spartan World Championship Powered by Rakuten, Trifecta World Championship and the 24-hour Ultra World Championship in Iceland December 8-9. Albon took home the men’s title at September’s World Championship in North Lake Tahoe, CA with a time of 02:07:04.
Paying homage to King Leonidas and the Sparta 300, the Spartan events will span the ancient and modern lands over the course of three days of competition, with the start line just steps from the historic statue of the revered King. The weekend kicks-off November 2 withtheopening Ceremony at the Central Square of Sparta featuring opening remarks from Mayor of Sparta, Mr. Evangelos Valiotis, and De Sena followed by a parade through the city streets.
Spartan’s first event weekend in Sparta took place in 2017 and drew athletes from 40 countries racing on the historic trails of the city.
